In app subscriptions are to allow the user to buy only what he needs from hiker to full blown desert racer or Event organizer. These are stated in the app description. Also the ability to save satellite maps for offline use is subscription based yearly through an outside company. Some people like to just complain that a full blown navigation package is not just free or a one time cost like Angry Birds... Doubt at a $150 a year...up front price..they would have changed their review...
